I just went ahead, just a moment ago actually, and pulled it off. I need to be able to use that thumb for hotbox controls and I got tired of it being all... wrong. 
It's actually no that bad. What was coming off seems to have healed underneath quite well. You can tell I took a chunk out of my thumb for sure, but it's not bad.
